Star Trek merely a TV show or Hollywood movie franchise? Perhaps that’s simply what Gene Roddenberry’s entertainment legacy means to you, but to scores of devotees, a notion of living as a Super Fan definitely applies.
Let’s define our focus. What exactly is a Super Fan? It may mean different things to different people. However, there are some defining commonalities. These are fans who not only watch the sci-fi phenomenon regularly. They can quote episode lines like gospel. They also buy the merchandise – from action figures and t-shirts to even imbibing real Romulan Ale. They are hardcore, loyal and devoted Trekkies or Trekkers.
And yes, they do indeed Live Long and Prosper.
Being a sort of super fan myself led me to watching the show – later even writing professionally for Star Trek: The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine. All that Star Trek culture introduced me to other passionate Trekkers.
This is first in my series of chats with these sci-fi loving Super Fans. Todd Baldwin impresses me as one of the most devoted and knowledgeable lovers of Trek I’ve ever met. So launching this interview series with him felt only natural.
Why do you love Star Trek so much? What does it mean to you?
The world we live in today is crazy. I think we all need hope. Star Trek provides that hope for me. The Trek universe shows a future where we have solved most of society’s ills. It’s a positive future where we have evolved as a species.
Also, who doesn’t want to fly a Starship?
When did you first watch Trek – can you remember clearly?
Back in the early 70s, I had a small black and white TV in my room. I distinctly remember thinking that Uhura was so beautiful.
Then, of course, I started really watching Star Trek in syndication and became a Trekkie!
What makes you a Super Fan? Is there a unique criteria?
I’m not sure I would call myself a Super Fan but I do spend an extraordinary amount of time obsessing over Star Trek. I can probably name the Trek episode after hearing a quote from it. Of course, there is the collecting of all sorts of memorabilia as well. OK, maybe I am a Super Fan!
It’s may be a tall order, but can you list your favorite characters.
OK, this is a hard one!
Spock from TOS and Data from TNG. They both have emotional issues which I can relate to. Then there is Kira and Quark! I love Kira for being a strong woman with deeply held beliefs and convictions. As for Quark, who doesn’t love a bartender with a heart made of gold-pressed latinum?
I really love Captain Janeway! Great character played to perfection by Kate Mulgrew.
As for Enterprise I have to go with T’Pol and Trip. I wish that they had had a happy ending. I would also like to add Porthos! Who doesn’t love a Starfleet Beagle?
Do you enjoy the new Star Trek movies or the CBS All Access show, Star Trek: Discovery? If you like it, why? If you don’t, why don’t you enjoy the show?
I love all the TOS and TNG Star Trek movies. All were not great but they were always entertaining. I liked the new reboot movies but I had a hard time connecting with the new cast. To me, there is only ONE Spock. No one can replace Nimoy. I enjoyed those movies but feel no real connection to them.
I know some people like Discovery. I don’t! The positive outlook that Trek always had has been thrown out a airlock. It lacks substance. The writers and people in charge of Discovery should be court marshaled and brought before a Starfleet Tribunal.
I look forward to the day when those in charge of Star Trek return it the the Greatness it once had! Live Long and Prosper
